Downtown LA Proper Hotel - Hotel and Short-Stay Interior of the Year 2022.

This project is a reimagined 1920s building with a modern palette, drawing inspiration from its location in Downtown L.A.

The 148-room hotel layers restored, timely vestiges with elements of Latin American and Moroccan design, and site specific installations by local contemporary artists Abel Macias, Ben Medansky, Morgan Peck, and Judson Studios.

Nodding to its former life as a YWCA, Downtown L.A. Proper Hotel transforms existing features into stand-out accommodations including the Pool Suite, featuring a full-sized indoor swimming pool, and the Court Suite, showcasing the original floors from an indoor basketball court.

Judges comments: "This project exudes a sense of joyfulness that needs to be rewarded! The interior design evokes an experience that subverts the formality of conventional hotel design through its sense of identity and integrity throughout."
