The project is an outdoor plaza expansion of the existing Art building on an University campus. The program includes a coffee shop, a performing stage, and an open seating area. The design is to create a semi outdoor space that serves as an extension of the existing building, while satisfying the client's programmatic needs. A majority portion of the canopy structure is open to maximize natural light. The pattern of the canopy’s void space is a reflection of the existing façade, an architectural gesture that relates the structure to the existing campus. In lieu of fencing and other physical barriers, strategically located planters and a distinctive hexagon paving pattern are utilized to define the boundary of the project site. In order to avoid being isolated from the surrounding campus and the major artery, two intersecting entrances are created connecting adjacent pedestrian walkways. The orientation of the coffee spot and its associated seating area reinforces one of the entrances and welcomes pass-by students.
