I wanted to design an armchair that is timeless. An armchair that feels like it has been there for a long time. An armchair that will become an iconic design. An armchair that has lines of simplicity and elegance. I started with the idea of a wide cube. I used natural wood as the basis of design. I wanted this wood to be very different and special. I used antique chestnut wood that is 200 years old. The pattern and the lines on this wood was very distinct and glamorous. Finding this historical wood was a challange. I designed the cushions with a modern and plain approach. They are large and wide. The cushioning is very soft and bulky therefore making the seater feel very comfortable. I wanted this wooden structure to feel like it is floating in air. I designed the legs with an angle that starts wide and norrows down as it touches the floor. The legs are made of bronze. I also designed corner braces made of bronze which are placed on the wood structure. They are located at sides and the back of the armchair and complement the whole design. My approach to design has always been blending history with present and leaving a heritage. Emirgan Armchair is a great reflection of my work.
